This year, for the first time, our graduating actors will be performing in a showcase that will be entirely online. Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts’ (LIPA) Head of Acting Will Hammond believes the change will give the actors “a rounded and in-depth” way of highlighting their skills to the industry.
Will says: “This isn’t just a streamed version of a showcase performance. This is something new. What we’re creating is digitised profiling of our actors. This film will provide agents and casting directors with an opportunity to get to know each of our 29 actors in a way they wouldn’t be able to do in the traditional format.”
Due to be shared in April 2021, the Graduating Actors 2021 Showcase will be a professionally produced film that features not only the students’ showcase scenes from their performance in the Paul McCartney Auditorium but also clips from their their showreels and interviews.
The move to an online showcase was necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, but Will believes the change is a positive one. “There’s been a lot of talk in the industry that online showcases will become the norm within the next 10 years. COVID-19 and the change in creative parameters has meant we have had to fast track that.
“Innovation is a key part of our training and this is a completely new creative endeavour for us. We and the students are incredibly excited to be taking this on and we can’t wait to share it.”
