First Look: LIPA Unveils Major One Hope Place Expansion Ahead of New Academic Year

The doors are about to open on a new chapter for The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. The major redevelopment of One Hope Place is now almost complete, and LIPA will welcome students into the brand-new facilities later this month. As work on site enters its final stages, newly released photographs offer a first glimpse inside a building set to transform how the next generation of performers, producers and creative technologists learn their craft.

The project has been made possible by £2.5 million in capital funding from the Office for Students (OfS), awarded to develop One Hope Place as a major new hub for performance, production, and digital innovation. The grant enabled LIPA to complete Phase 2 of the building's transformation, first tackling essential structural work including roof replacement and damp-proofing, then fitting out the interior with a rich new mix of teaching spaces for digital creative technologies, rehearsal, performance and music production.

David Fletcher, LIPA's Chief Operating Officer, said: 'An opportunity like One Hope Place, just 150 metres down the road, was simply too good to miss. From the initial OfS bid to the final fit-out, working collaboratively with Maris Interiors has allowed us to increase our capacity right when we need it most. Crucially, this building is for every course and every student across our community, and we are delighted to have it ready on time for the new academic year.'

At the heart of the building is a flexible 56-seat studio theatre with adjustable seating, equally at home hosting performances, seminars, and lectures, supported by a state-of-the-art lighting and control suite. Alongside it sit a large new dance studio, two acting rehearsal studios and multiple seminar spaces. Sound and music students gain five new practice rooms and a recording studio with a combined live and mixing room. An outdoor social seating area gives the community a place to gather, and a dedicated computer lab will follow in 2027.

One Hope Place also marks a bold step in LIPA's ambition to lead digital innovation across the performing arts sector. A specialist Digital Creative Technologies lab has been designed for exploration of emerging technologies in the creative industries, while virtual production and advanced visualisation are woven directly into the performance facilities, bringing the tools of tomorrow's industry into the rehearsal room today.
