BAFTA winning sound mixer gives Sound Tech masterclass

Sound Technology students received a masterclass from BAFTA award-winning sound mixer Adrian Bell.

Focusing on his experience of working on location, Adrian also took part in a Q&A with students who were specialising in post-production and location recording.

After training at the BBC Film Unit Adrian worked on factual and documentary series for 15 years, he then moved on to high end TV drama productions and films. His credits include Merlin and Dancing on the Edge (BBC) and films The Inferno (dir. Ron Howard) and About Time (dir. Richard Curtis).

In 2014 he was awarded the BAFTA for Sound (Fiction) for Dancing on the Edge, having previously been nominated twice for the Sound (Factual) BAFTA.

Adrian’s visit in January was his first time at LIPA. He was impressed by the students, facilities and the Sound Technology course’s approach to training, which starts off by covering all areas before options to specialise. Adrian said: “It’s similar to how I started at the BBC where you worked across different departments. I think it’s really useful to understand the different roles and their issues and problems before you start tackling your own.

“For example, I think it’s important for post-production teams to understand what we are trying to do on location and the issues we may have. Hopefully that way we can avoid some of those issues. It also gives you an opportunity to discover what the best role for you is.”
