What happens  after I have applied?

Step 1: Our assessment of your application

We’ll review your application and if we think you are on course to meet our entry requirements, we’ll invite you to attend one of our audition events. These take place between October and April. If you live in the UK, this will be in Liverpool. If you live overseas, we will automatically invite you to an online audition or one of our overseas audition events in a location near you. Our overseas auditions for this course take place in South Korea (October), the USA (January and March) and Norway (March). If you live overseas and would prefer to travel here to attend your audition, please email international@lipa.ac.uk

If you live in the UK and would prefer to attend an online audition, please email admissions@lipa.ac.uk

Step 2: Preparing for the audition

We send you audition guidelines to help you prepare yourself fully for the audition.

In the downloads below, you will find guidelines for 2024 entry. As we also ask you to take a music theory test at your audition, you will find a factsheet for 2024 entry below.

Step 3: Attending an audition

The audition is a two-way process, aiming to offer you the opportunity to discover if the course is right for you, whilst we try to determine whether you have the experience and qualities to benefit from what we have to offer. In addition to getting to know more about your relevant skills and attributes, we want to understand; what aspects of music interest and inspire you and why, what attracts you to working in the industry, and, what attracts you to our course. We will, therefore, explore your career aspirations with you, and how you think our course can help you achieve these.

We know auditions are nerve-wracking so your best approach is to prepare by reading our guidelines carefully and as soon as possible after you receive them. At your audition, we’re interested in finding out about you as an individual, so please try to relax, be yourself and enjoy yourself on the day.

Step 4: Communicating our decision

We need time to reflect on the candidates we’ve seen, so we do not tell you the outcome of your audition on the day itself.

We aim to communicate our decision to you within three working weeks. Unfortunately, it can take longer than this sometimes – please do not assume that you have been unsuccessful if you have not heard from us – it may be that we are still making decisions.

If you have any concerns about the status of your application, please do not hesitate to contact our admissions team at admissions@lipa.ac.uk

When we audition you, we may consider you for other BA Music pathways and for our Foundation Certificate course, so it’s possible we might make you an offer for an alternative pathway or course to the one that you originally applied for.

Unfortunately, due to the high volume of applications we receive, if you are unsuccessful, we are unable to offer feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many courses can I apply to?

On your UCAS form, you can apply for up to five choices. Please select one pathway from the Music degree course to apply to and do not use an additional UCAS choice to apply to other pathways from the Music degree course.

You are welcome to apply for other programmes at LIPA as well such as the BA Sound Technology course but this will count as another of your five choices.

You cannot apply to the Foundation Certificate in Popular Music and Music Technology via UCAS, so you would need to apply to us directly for that course. It, therefore, would not be counted against your five UCAS choices.

How much does it cost to apply via UCAS?

The fee for applying through UCAS for 2024 entry is £27.50. This is a one-off application fee and applicants can add five choices to their application.

Do I have to pay an audition fee?

There is no audition fee for this course. Travel grants are available if you meet certain criteria.

What happens if I miss the deadline for applying?

There is a high demand for places, so if you miss the deadline for your course, please contact our Admissions team at admissions@lipa.ac.uk. If you are an international student you are not bound by the UCAS deadline and we will be happy to consider your direct application after this date, please contact international@lipa.ac.uk for more information.

Can I defer entry?

We do not accept applications for deferred entry. However, there are exceptional circumstances when we will consider this, such as cases of compulsory military service for international students.

I have a learning difficulty or disability, will this affect my application?

We value diversity and will welcome your application. If you would like to request a reasonable adjustment as part of the audition/interview process, please contact the Admissions Manager to discuss this. Email admissions@lipa.ac.uk or call +44 (0)151 330 3084.

What is the course code to use on my UCAS application?

The code number for our Music (Popular, Contemporary and Commercial) degree pathway is W300. LIPA’s institution number is L48.
